What Causes Itching And Burning In Vagina After A Pap Smear?

I m 18 years old and pregnant. I ve never had a pap smear before. I had to get one last week for obvious reasons and it didn t hurt while being performed. I did feel slightly itchy and it burrned a little a couple hours later. The day after the exam me and my boyfriend were trying to have intercourse and the inside of my vagina burned so bad that we had to stop. I thought it would go away but it s been over a week and we still can t have sex. I ve also had mild but uncomfortable cramping. Could it be from the pap smear? I was perfectly healthy and normal down there before.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to side effects of the pap smear. It is not uncommon to experience cramping or mild bleeding as a result of the pap smear. Usually, these symptoms go away on its own. No treatment is needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
