What Causes Left Foot Drop And Calf Muscle Cramps After Fitting Orthotics?

Hi Doc!I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis about 5 months ago, and was fitted with orthotics by my ortho specialist. 2 weeks after the orthotics, I was playing golf, experiencing severe pain on the outside of my affected foot whenever I drove the ball. I adjusted the golf shoe, tightening it and adjusting the othotic. The pain subsided. Later that day, I experienced what I would characterize as drop foot , where my left fore foot slams into the ground at each step. I cannot correct this, and it continues. I have had my doctor and ortho specialist suggest I was just getting used to the orthotics, but 5 months? Another symptom is experiencing severe oscillating cramps in my left calf, upon awakening and stretching out that leg/calf/ankle/foot system, which can be relieved by stretching the calf more.Any ideas?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The left foot drop and calf muscle cramps indicate possible compression of common perineal or fibular nerve most likely. In my clinic, after thorough motor and sensory examination of the lower limb, I do recommend an Electro-myography with Nerve conduction study to evaluate the issue in greater details.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
