What Causes Left Sided Radiating Pain From Ear Down To Shoulder?

My father in law (88 years old) is experiencing pain on the right side of his neck from his ear down to his shoulder while standing or sitting. When he lays down, the pain diminishes and goes away. The ER doctor said it was arthritic pain, but I am skeptical.

welcome at HCM
i have gone through your case and being your physcian i completely understand ur health concerns.
based upon the history u have provided the pain doesnt seem to be a RADICULAR one...
is this pain radiates to arm or hand?? is there any numbness?/ is there any weakness???
the pain probably of musculoskeltal in origin and as he is 88 yrs old u can anticipate some wear and tear in cervical spine bones leading to arthritis.
he should be seen by orthopedic surgeon and get his XRAY neck done along with DEXA scan...
all he need now is rest and painkillers....
hope ur query is answered adequately
regards
dr saad sultan
