What Causes Left Ventricular Hypertrophy?

My son had an EKG when he was 3 that showed possible LVH. He had an echo which showed he did not have this and was normal. He originally had the EKG because I had WPW and we wanted to screen him. Fast forward 2yrs later - The other day he was outside playing and fainted. It was over 100 degrees out and he might have been fighting a virus. He has fainted from seeing blood before (I do too) but never for being overheated/sick so this was a first time thing. Anyway we had an EKG at the Drs and it showed borderline LVH again. Is it possible he does have this even though the echo done 2 yrs ago was negative? I have heard that its common for ekgs to show false positives for this and the echo is the real test for it. But now we are stressed all over again as we were two yrs ago and are being referred for an echo/cardiologist.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes , you are right. Echocardiography is the final tool to detect hypertrophy. Second , 2 years is a big time to develop hypertrophy. Anyway, go to a cardiologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Varinder Joshi, General & Family Physician
