What Causes Light Headedness And Dizziness On Taking Bisoprolol Fumarate For BP?
I have been prescribed Bisoprolol Fumarate 1.5mg and have so far been taking it for 13 days, and should be taking it for a total of 28 days. I was in the UK and became unwell with dizziness, light-headedness, vertigo and had an ECG and blood tests. The ECG was normal but with an elevated pulse rate of 92. The doctor prescribed me this medicine because my original BP was 210/110 with a PR of 122. 10 days later it was 138/81 PR 86. I have over the last few days been experiencing light-headedness and some dizzy spells and am not happy with this side effect. Is this normal? Will this continue, or should I discontinue using the tablets. The doctor told me that I would be able to stop medication after 28 days, but should have my BP checked. I have taken my own BP with a wrist BP machine and it showed today 138/82 PR 70. I would very much appreciate your advice. I am now back in Germany where I live, but have a British passport.

Bisoprolol is a beta blocker used in treatment of hypertension. The lightheadedness and dizziness are common side effects of bisoprolol.
NEVER stop antihypertensive medications until and unless specifically instructed by physician. And abruptly stopping beta blocker may actually cause rebound increase in blood pressure that is too dangerous.
I would have recommended two options for my patient. First is to change to other beta blockers like atenolol that does not have the above side effects. Second is to change to difference class of antihypertensive drugs like ramipril which is a ACE inhibitor.
Because of increased heart rate; I would suggest you the first option. If heart rate wasn’t an issue; I would suggest the second option. And do remember that the drug will definitely continue beyond 28 days unless the blood pressure is way below normal. Do discuss these things with your physician while changing the treatment. hmm
