What Causes Lightheaded Feeling In A Patient With Transient Ischemic Attack?

I recently (2 weeks ago) had a TIA with no residual complications. Today I have lightheaded feeling, tight feeling in my head and although I can walk comfortably I have a feeling that I m not as secure in that as I was. I m 85 , Dr put me on aspirin325mg,daily. I have generally low blood pressure, not overweight - 6 ft - 160lbs. Am seeing a cardiologist Fri in Tampa. Are these symptoms a warning of another TIA. Appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from lightheaded feeling, you have history of TIA. You can walk comfortably but have an insecure feeling. Symptoms of lightheadedness, sensation of losing balance or co ordination, weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech maybe indicative of TIA that resemble those found early in a stroke.

Be vigilant of the developing symptoms and get a follow up clinical examination done by your treating doctor so that treatment can be started. Dizziness or light headedness with or without associated neurologic symptoms is the most common symptom of posterior circulation transient ischemic attack (TIA) and can be more frequent before posterior circulation strokes.

To confirm diagnosis your treating doctor will order intracranial and extracranial imaging of the vertebral arteries and basilar artery. Once the diagnosis and evaluation has been done by your treating doctor, posterior circulation TIAs manifesting as dizziness or vertigo will be treated as early as possible.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
