What Causes Lightheadedness And Fainting After Withdrawal Of Keppra?

My daughter just started coming off keppra 4 days ago, she is weening off slowly, coming down 125mg every 2 weeks. She was on 750mg morning and 750mg at night. However, this morning when she got up she felt very lightheaded and almost fainted, is this a side effect of coming off the medication? She has been on Keppra for 3 years.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your daughter is experiencing the withdrawal symptoms of keppra. Help her ween off gradually.

More symptoms of withdrawal will be seen in the first few weeks. Slowly the symptoms will lessen as the body gets adjusted.

Keep her well hydrated, well fed. Stay wit her, she will need your help. It will be better if you stay connected with a detox center so that she can be managed with medical support urgently in case she loses control or gets depressed. Stay connected to her treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K
