Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i am looking after an elderly lady and she has slowly taking in less and less food. Mentaly she's alert and she takes her fluids quite happily. She's on Ensure once a day as well. She simply will not eat more than a tablespoon of food for b'fast, lunch and she has the Ensure for supper. Her ailments are a dicky heart.....arrithmia, underactive thyroid and arthritis. Other than that she's quite healthy apart from getting thinnner every day.....she's 87.
Apart from it being due to her old age, lack of appetite hold various causative factors in a person having morbidities like what she has. It could be a simple underlying viral infection which is very common in elderly in seasonal change, which is causing her not to eat. It could also be her decreased mobility which lets the digestive system and metabolism slow down and therefore decrease appetite. However, significant weight loss can raise eyebrows, and provoke your doctor to consider other major diseases. I advise you to keep track of her weight for a month, and get all her routine health investigation done timely..
