What Causes Loss Of Sense Of Smell Post A Bout Of Severe Cold?

I lost my sense of smell last Winter following a bad cold. This winter I have had another cold and I often need to unblock my ears. If I m unsuccessful in unblocking my ears or blowing my nose, I get dizzy until I can unblock my ears - I have nearly fainted on a couple of occasions. A couple of years ago I had nasal polyps (infected) which I had removed. Whilst I would love to get my sense of smell back, I am wondering if this all related and what I should do.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I feel the lost sense of smell is related to your nasal polyp and it's removal issue causing damage / fibrosis of nerve endings giving sense of smell. This needs to be confirmed by nerve conduction test by. neurologist. Another thing I want to suggest is about managing cold followed by sinus and eustachian tube block with consultation of ENT doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
