Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I tend to have high blood pressure but I am amble to maintaint under 130(systolic) most of the time. My concern is with my diastolic pressure. It can get very low (47-60) even if my systolic is a bit hi. I’ve read that it is a great risk for heart conditions or attacks. Tonight my bp is 149/66. I am 51, female, do not smoke, 5’6”, 170pds, moderately active. Should I see a cardiologist? My physician says I am fine. Thanks!
In my opinion, your physician is right. The medications you take to control your hypertension are prone to bring down your diastolic as well. I would like you to keep a few things in mind: 1. Postural hypotension: when you get up from lying down, sit by the side of your bed first and then stand. It would prevent any dizziness that associate with low diastolic pressure. 2. If you do feel dizzy or like you are blacking out while you are standing, sit down immediately. 3. If you do have such an episode, definitely talk to your physician about altering the dose of your drugs.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
