What Causes Low Red Cell Count In A Diabetic Patient?
I just got back some blood work. Turns out I m diabetic 2. The thing that concernerned the doctor were my red cell count which was very low 89 I believe. My grandfather at age 70 stopped producing red blood cells and had to get an oil change ( blood transfusion regularly. He was 80)
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. low blood cell count could be caused commonly due to nutritional deficiencies like iron, essential minerals and hemopoietic vitamins. However, it could be also due to certain genetic diseases. Diabetes may not be contributing directly for low blood cell count, but may be co-existing illness. Kindly continue with the treatment for diabetes as suggested. The reason for low blood cells can be known by doing blood work up investigations like: 1. Complete blood count. 2. Peripheral smear examination. 3. Bone marrow aspiration cytology. 4. Bone marrow biopsy studies. Kindly consult Physician with the above investigation reports for proper evaluation and management. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
