What Causes Metallic Taste In The Mouth And Lightheadedness?

Occasionally I sense a sudden metallic taste in my mouth and it always precedes a feeling of lightheadedness or I feel like I may faint. The taste is always the same and not associated with any medication that I know of. Sometimes this happens when I am lying down. I was close to a blood pressure monitor once when this happened and there may have been a brief spike in blood pressure, not any level that would appear dangerous and it subsided quickly. This happens maybe 6 times a year for the last 2 years. There may have been stress in my life at those times but not always that I recognize. I have a trait for thalassemia minor and take metformin for pre diabetes or type 2, have been irregular with metformin over the last few years. Any thoughts? YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Metallic taste is a common symptom with sinusitis and those with a cough. A little blood mixed sputum, which is seen in rhinitis (Runny nose) patients due to recurrent nose blowing can also give this taste.
Apart from this, poor dental and oral hygiene, some drugs and systemic diseases like diabetes can give this symptom.
So, you may try to reduce nose blowing, use some antiallergic drugs like loratadine, smell menthol vaporizers frequently and keep good oral hygiene.
This should solve the problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
