What Causes Mild Pain In Left Abdomen, Numbness Of Left Big Toe And Back Pain?

I am Joseph (Male,56) in Nairobi, Kenya. I have a problem spanning about 20 years. I feel a dull pain on my left side from the lower left abdomen down the left leg. In my description it is not debilitating, but it is an inconvenience. If I twist my waist to make me feel the pain, I aggravate the muscle (or nerve?) making it more painful the next day, right inside the left buttock muscles, which seems to be the centre of the pain. Actually there is no pain in the left leg, but I feel a slight but permanent numbness at the tip of my big left toe. It all started as a burning sensation at the sole of my left foot, those days I could feel it progress up the left leg until the groin area. About seven years ago I had a sudden twist in my digestion making it bad. I thought I had amoeba but was confirmed negative in hospital. I had a long period of feeling the need to drink water at night and lacking sleep due to the indigestion. I could not sleep on the tummy, it was as if it was swollen. Generally my stool has been browner than before ever since. Digestion has improved greatly by observing certain practices like eating less food and eating early before sleep, eating food with less cooking oil and I am able to sleep well now. Overall I can say there is much improvement but something need to be diagnosed in the muscles, blood vessels or nerves. The only other issue I normally feel is general back pain especially if I stain in the course of my work, and this may be or may be not related to the above. Sincerely, Joseph.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your detailed history of having two different issues like pain in the back that radiates to the left lower limb and gastrointestinal disturbance.
The problem with intestines is settling well with the measures you have mentioned and since you have been tested for Amoebiasis you can continue with the same changes in food habits. Yet it is better to go for stool tests for three day. If any positive finding is found it can be treated accordingly.
As for the pain that is maximum in left buttock, burning pain in leg and foot on left, the causes can be as follows:
Sciatica nerve compression.
Left sacroiliac joint arthritis with involvement of the adjoining muscles and nerves that pain radiates to other parts.
I would advise you to go for MRI of the spine and sacroiliac joint, consultation of an Orthopedic Surgeon and go for further management as would be advised.
Take a probiotic.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
