I was diagnosed for having a mole behind my eye. Dr said I needed to check on it every 6 months. Haven't been in 2 years. Going in two weeks to a different optomologist. Wasn't explained about mole. Could you help me? Thank you. Age is 72, 120 lbs, 5ft 2 in. Thyroid prob when was 24 yrs. Nothing since. Healthy so far.
We have melanocyte cells in skin and eye, which give color to them. In eye they are in choroid layer, normally they are in well regulated number and evenly distributed cells. In few by birth or acquired later they are excess and clumped in one particular region to form mole, hence appear dark patch. These moles have risk of outgrowing into benign growth or even into a cancer. Risk is more with age, hence regular followup can identify any growth changes of mole and treat them early without salvaging eye.
Hence do have regular followup, preferably with same doctor.
