What Causes Motion Sickness And Nausea After Sensing Popping Noise In The Ear?

Today whilst I was at work, I blew my nose (I have a runny nose from a cold) and my ears popped. However after my ears popped I kind of went into some sort of spasm. My eyes began to turn to the left like I was walking horizontally in my air but I was standing up straight. I also went into a state of motion sickness and felt really nauseous. I had to sit down because I could no longer stand up or walk on my own. I felt like I was going to faint. The eye twitching/spasm went away after a minute but I ve been left with a nauseous feeling and a head ache for the rest of the day. Is there anything I should be worried about?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.

Noted your history of having cold, blowing of nose followed by popping of ears, motion sickness, eyes twitching which settled but the headache and nausea continued.
The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
The blowing of nose cause the Eustachian tubes to open up and push air or fluid inside the middles ear, the pressure increases causes the symptoms that you have mentioned.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult your Doctor, preferably an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination, ENT Endoscopy to know the state of nose and tympanic membranes.
This will allow a proper diagnosis and get your treated as per the findings.
This can be in the form of Nasal decongestant drops, oral antihistamine, steroids and anti-inflammatory.
Do not blose nose again.
Take a long term treatment of 3 weeks as such disease takes time to go back to normal.
Symptomatic treatment with a PPI like Omeprazole and Domperidone for motion sickness may be added on.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
