What Causes Muscle Cramps, Stiffnes In Hands, shortness Of Breath, face Numbness After Total Thyroidectomy?
I had total thyroidectomy on December 27th, yesterday had to run to ER. I got muscle cramps all over body, stiffnes on both hands, shortness of breathing, face numb and can't control face muscles. I felt all the stiffness of muscles of my body and was afraid not be able to breath and the heart muscles will stop working. ER doctor run blood test and head CT, calcium is 8.5 he said is not bad and explained that normal after the removal of important grand out. The same symptoms is continuing but as not scary as yesterday. Will you please help me, what can be done or to take beside Calctriol0.5 MCG and Lorazepam 1Mg. Are these symptoms will go away? My surgeon can't give me the straight answer he said calcium level is normal and seemed to dont understand what caused the says tom after the surgery a week ago. Thank you.
HI Thank for asking to HCM I really understand your problem, this is not the symptoms which could be said, that it is due to the operation you have gone through, this seems more of functional origin, this type of functional symptom are common in post surgical period, just take it easy, relax, control your nerve, keep your stress level low this is not going to do any harm to you and will be alright soon, I would advise you to have "Alprazolam 0.5 mg twice in day, take care and have nice time.
In my opinion all your symptoms are due to low calcium which in your case is due to damage to parathyroid gland during thyroidectomy surgery. Parathyroid gland is situated in close proximity to thyroid and likely to be injured during thyroidectomy. Parathyroid maintains normal calcium in body. If this is damaged, calcium decreases in body . You need not worry this problem temporary in most of cases and subsides by itself. Your serum calcium level should be monitored for next couple of weeks. Hope this helps. Take care.
