What Causes Mysterious Chest Infection?

My boyfriend is in the hospital with a mysterious chest infection. The have done a biopsy but because they gave him antibiotics, they were not able to get a culture. The infection is serious and close to his heart so they are guessing at what kind of antibiotics he needs and are giving him 3 types of antibiotics and will then do a CT scan to see if it has improved. Do you know what type of infection he can possibly have. They could not find any cancer cells from the biopsy and the first CT scan showed a large chest mass.

I can understand your boyfriend's situation and problem.
Since cancer cells are absent, no need to worry for lung cancer. Infections like tuberculosis, fungal, parasitic infection etc are uncommon and can cause mass like lesion in chest.
These are not diagnosed by routine culture method.
For them special culture media is used.
So discuss with your doctor about these uncommon infections.
Empirical anti tb drugs and anti fungal drugs can be tried.
