General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Suggestive of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Black stool (melena) is usually caused by bleeding in your upper gastrointestinal system or large bowel. Its common causes include peptic ulcer (stomach or duodenal ulcer), bleeding from the esophagus, cancer involving the esophagus or stomach, and use of certain medicines such as pain killers and blood thinners.

I advise you to consult your doctor for further evaluation and to under certain lab tests such as stool analysis, endoscopy, CT scan or angiogram to find out the source of bleeding and its diagnosis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
