What Causes Nausea And Vomiting While On Valacyclovir?
My 83-year-old wife has lost one kidney due to cancer. She also has a ophthalmological condition for which she has begun taking Valacyclovir (Valtrex) 500 mg, three times daily for two weeks, and she is beginning her second week. She is experiencing nausea and vomiting. Should she discontinue Valacyclovir, reduce the amount by two-thirds or one-half, or continue to try to reach her doctors who are not responding (voice messages which seem to be ignored)?
Hello, I understand your concerns here. Your wife has been started on Valcyclovir for a possible viral ophthalmologic infection. As you might know anti viral drugs are used only in certain conditions and most of the time viral illnesses resolves on its own. The nausea and vomiting can be a side effect of Valcyclovir or it can sometimes also be due to cancer medications if she is on any. If not, you can try reducing the dose to 2/3rd prescribed and see if it improves. If she doesn't seem to tolerate it well despite reduced dosing then its advisable that you stop taking the drug and have a consultation with your doctor. In the meantime keep her well hydrated and take adequate rest.
