What Causes Night Time Coughing And Runny Nose In A Child?
Hi Doctor, My 7-year old girl has nighttime cough and running nose for extended period of time (more than 3 months). At daytime she is fine. But soon after she is in her bed, her nose starts running and here comes the cough. It started last winter when allergy season starts in Florida where we live. Antihistamines worked at the first place but 1 or 2 months ago it started again and her allergy medicine stopped working. I cleaned up every square inch in her room from dust but it didn t help. Last week she got an ear infection and she is almost done taking antibiotics. Today she sleeps in our bedroom and I hear her coughing and blowing nose. We really need advice!
Hello As you mentioned that you hear her coughing and blowing nose . Such type of symptoms are due to bronchoconstriction , caused by some allergen ( as in Florida ) . You are taking every precaution for allergens . Due to atmosphere ( due to pollution in air ) allergen inhaled through air in lungs (airways ) and produces allergy and bronchoconstriction. When such patient visit my clinic I advise my patient to take montelukast+ bambuterol , one tablet ,usually in the night ( 10 mg / kg body weight ) . My patient respond very well . I know being as a parent , there is concern ,but don't take tension she will respond this treatment . Tablet require , when she feel bronchoconstriction ( cough and running of nose). Since this is a prescription medicine , so consult your doctor for this. Hot coffee also provide instant relief . Hope this will help you. Good luck for daughter.
