What Causes Numbness In Right Foot When Diagnosed With Carotid Artery Disease?
My 87 year old mother started experiencing numbness in her right foot. The numbness moved up her leg, side, arm and ended around her mouth. She spent the day at the doctors having tests run. They found she had blocked carotid arteries on each side of her neck. She is waiting to see a neurosurgeon. Also, her legs seem to give out. Can you please give me an idea of what may be happening to her?
The blockage of the carotid arteries which are in the neck would possible cause the symptoms that she is experiencing in the neck and arms but would not e related to the symptoms in the legs.
Numbness in the legs can be due to different possible causes such as: (1) diabetes (2)trauma or compression of the nerves coming out of the spine, this can occur with arthritis , stenosis , prolapse of discs (3)vitamin b 12 or folate deficiency (4)liver or kidney disease (5)exposure to toxins
The neurosurgeon may consider nerve conduction tests to determine which nerves are involved and may also do blood tests to check vitamin levels, screen for diabetes, assess the liver and kidneys.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
