Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Numbness In The Jaw And Pain In The Neck?
I had an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy on Monday. A mouth guard was inserted as well as a strap around my neck prior to the procedures. 2 hours post procedures, I noticed lip numbness, jaw and neck pain on my right side. Today is Friday and I still have the symptoms, with difficulty chewing food. I also cannot whistle or properly move food in my mouth to swallow it. I would like reassurance that this is perhaps a normal occurrence and that it will subside. is there anything I can take - is this perhaps an allergy to plastic? My doctor has not returned my call. please advise.
I had gone through your question I can understand your concern about your lip numbness and deficulties in chewing food.
As per your history it seems to me that because of the large constant pressure there is mild injury to your inferior alveolar nerve. Some times unfit mouth guard can do it. It is transient in nature and will subside with time but should not take more then six weeks.
If your symptoms will not subside with one and half month you may need a dental or ENT consultation. During mean time you can take the Vitamin B 12 supplements once daily for a month. You don't need to worry, it will subside with time.
