What Causes Orthostatic Hypotension?

I ve been diagnosed with orthostatic hypotension, after two syncope episodes triggered by rising too quickly. However, I had a similar dizzy experience today, while standing, when a piece of food became hard to swallow. Not stuck, really, just hard to get down. Is this a part of the hypotension, or something else? I do remember at least a couple of similar episodes while eating.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Dehydration, blood loss, and anemia are the most common reasons to develop low blood pressure when standing.

I recommend doing a complete blood count for further evaluation.

I also recommend increasing the sodium in the diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
