What Causes Pain And Cramps During Menstruation Cycle?

I smoked for 20 years and 2 weekes ago stopped with the help of the patch. Since then, I've noticed my last cycle was more painful and I've been cramping everyday since my cycle ended. Could me stop smoking or the patches be the cause for menstration cycle being different?
