What Causes Pain And Sudden Shock Under Knee Cap After TPF After Torn Cartilage?

Hello I had a TPF with 7 screws and plate im 16 weeks with partial weight bearing last week I tried about 75% and the inner knee of the left leg below the knee cap began throbbing and I have had sudden electrical shocks even just sitting sneezing or take a deep breath.. one dr said bursitis another maybe to do with nerves and also possibly mensiscus tear. I had aching on the area of the knee since surgery but I did tear the cartilage into 25 pieces and the surgeon repaired it sp whats your opinion

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, there should not arise problem after 4 months of a ORIF for a tibial plateau fixation. An xray of the operated site will show the status of the implants and the adjacent bone (to rule out any abnormality either in the implants or the bone).

I personally feel that your symptoms could be attributed to the sudden stretch of the soft tissue sleeve on the medial aspect of the knee after a prolonged period of immobilization.

Keep on gradually increased weight bearing on the leg rather than putting 75% weight at a stretch.
- Apply ice wrapped in a damp towel to the painful area for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the day.
- Avoid any movement that produces pain.
- Gentle massaging of the painful area with an analgesic gel will be helpful
- Before activities, gentle heating can help loosen the tight soft tissues. Apply a heat pack to the painful area prior to stretching

If your symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, consult your treating doctor for further workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
