What Causes Pain Around Calf Muscles And Tingling Sensation In Toes?

My right leg, specifically above ankle in calf area, began hurting this morning. Tender to walk on. As day progressed, the pain expanded to behind the knee and then in thigh area. All on back of leg, nothing on front. Tingling in toes now. Pain increases when I flex my foot downward. I do not remember bumping or hurting myself. Probably unrelated but last Friday, I had heart rate problems. I have MVP. While eating dinner, I felt a little out of sorts. I have an app on my phone to monitor my heart rate so I used it. Resting heart rate was 110. Stayed high most of the weekend. Finally got it back into the low to mid 80 s Sunday night. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

If this pain and tingling sensations over leg and toes are not troubling your day to day life or it occurs occasionally then there no need to worry much, because in many cases no apparent cause is found to explain such tingling.

However sometimes this tingling sensations are actually paresthesia, which are associated with few medical conditions such as:

1) remaining in posture for a long time
2) lack of blood supply to the particular area
3) Spina nerve root compression like cervical radiculopathy or multiple sclerosis - but these rare possibilities
4) Diabetes, thyroid state or vitamin deficiency.

So if this feeling is constant and troublesome then you need to see physician who will examine you thoroughly with complete medical history and order relevant investigations to rule out above causes.

Do not be worried like I said in most cases the causes are benign and don't need treatment. You can take over the counter pain killers like diclofenac for pain relief.

Hope this will help you how to proceed further.

Regards,
