What Causes Pain In Nipples?

Hello. I m experiencing pain in both of my nipples. I am a woman. I started experiencing this pain about 4 months ago and only recently have I been on birth control. It s in both nipples. I also am having headaches that started about a week ago. They are only on the left side of my head around my temple. Also I am feeling a odd sensation around my lip. It s a tingle and numb feeling. I am feeling very tired and stressed lately due to personal reasons. I m going through a lot of change and I ve been very concerned about my health. I do not believe the symptoms could be cause by pregnancy because I only just started to be sexually active a month ago and I ve felt the breast pain for 4 months now. I would really appreciate the help. Thank you. I am also 18 years of age. I hope it s nothing serious.

Hello,

One of the most common (and easily cured) causes of nipple pain is wearing tight or ill-fitting undergarments and clothing.

But nipple pain is also a problem for women with hormonal changes, who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

In addition, sore nipples can be caused by infection, certain kinds of breast cancer and some as simple as an allergy to laundry detergent.

Nipple pain is also a common occurrence in menstruating, pregnant, or breastfeeding women.

There are more serious causes of nipple pain, such as infections and cancer, so seeing a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment is important.

As a symptom, nipple pain differs from person to person. Some may feel their nipples are sore and tender, while others feel sharp pain or pain accompanied by itching.

Nipple pain caused by friction may be prevented by wearing a properly fitted sports bra, smooth synthetic fabrics, or by using protective products, such as rash guards and nipple shields.

Some creams or ointments may also help reduce friction. Nipple soreness caused by hormonal changes in menstruation or pregnancy may respond well to warmth or pain relievers, such as Ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Naira Jahangir, OB and GYN Specialist
