What Causes Pain In The Breast And Redness Around The Areola?
Hello Dr., I have one-sided breast pain that has worsened while traveling. Tonight I discovered that the areola in the effected breast is red diagonally through the middle. The top and bottom are normal colored. I am 60 years old. Should I seek urgent care?
What comes to mind first when my patient presents with pain and redness in the areola area, especially if the area is also warm, is mastitis, an infection if the breast which is well treated with antibiotics.
You could use over-the-counter broad spectrum antibiotics such as amocicillin-clavulinate. If symptoms do not resolve, you need to visit your doctor to rule out the two other possible causes which are; Paget disease of the breast, an inflammatory disease of the breast, and breast cancer.
Your doctor would schedule you for a mammogram and an ultrasound scan of the breast to exclude malignancies or lumps.
I hope I have answers your question.
Best wishes.
