What Causes Pain In The Knee After The Recovery Of The Fracture?

I had a fracture of my left shin and fabula 12 years back. After 3 years of recovery I started having pain in my left knee due to brisk walk and running on treadmill. From the last 3-4 years the pain is continuous and gets better with pain killers and analgesic and anti inflamatory medicines. I also went through an MRI which diagnosis cartilage damage of a portion due to angle change after fracture. Orthopedic Surgeon recommends an Orthoscopy. Please advise.
