Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m 14 years old, and my knee is giving me problems. It s been hurt before, and they gave me a knee brace to wear for 6 weeks. That helped but now (about 10 months later) it s been swelling again. When I put pressure on the right knee, it starts to throb under the knee cap and it will buckle sometimes and I will fall. Any advice?
Pain & swelling in the knees during adolescence may be due to sudden injury, tendinitis & apophysitis. Torn meniscus/ ligaments or cartilage, Pateller tendonitis or Quadriceps tendonitis, etc.
To avoid stress at the knee joint maintain low BMI if obese. Braces, orthotics may help to reduce pain & discomfort.
You are suggested to get your knee clinically examined by an orthopedics & get an X-Ray & MRI done.
Get treated at the earliest. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected.
Wear proper shoes. You may need acetaminophen (Tylenol) for relieve. Once the swelling & pain reduces consult a physiotherapist for exercises that will help.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
