What Causes Pain In The Left Arm?

My 60 year old male friend has had an aching left arm for a couple days, for no apparent reason, and he says it is getting more painful. He says aspirin has not helped the pain. I know that left arm pain is sometimes a symptom of an impending heart attack. What are some other symptoms we should be aware of and looking for if this might be the case? Is there anything he should do to help himself?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hi dear,
i understood your concern,
all arm pains cannot be due to heart problem.

so you can check , usually heart pain starts in chest like squeezing and radiates to left shoulder. it wont aggravates with shoulder movement.
and also associates with shortness of breath and decreasing work capacity.

if you pain is such a type go and meet your physician get an EKG done.

if your pain is not such type it may be due to wear and tear at your shoulder joint. go and consult orthopedician.
and get your advice.
thank you.
