What Causes Pain In The Upper Arm?

I have a cousin who has Down s syndrome who just got discharged from the hospital last night after 2 days. He had an IV inserted on the right antecubital area. This afternoon, he complained of pain on his right upper arm and when I checked, it has an area that is swollen, warm and pinkish. I have no doubt he developed phlebitis. What is the best Rx besides taking Tylenol? Cold or warm compress?

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, thrombophebitis is more likely.
First of all remove that IV line.
Apply thrombophobe ointment on the swollen area.
Limb elevation is also helpful on faster relief from the edema.
Application of ice packs is also beneficial.
Glycerin and magnesium sulphate powder dressing is also good for relief in the edema and Redness.
Usually 5-7 days time is required for complete recovery from the edema and Redness.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your cousin. Thanks.
