What Causes Pain In Thighs When Moved Sideways?

Hello, I exercise regularly and bumped up my routine with interval training and resistance training. I started to use the resistance bands and think I injured my right thigh (upper back region). Whenever I move sideways, I get a sting kind of pain. It is only at that moment but it stings. If I walk straight I have no problem. It is side movements that sting. I have completely stopped exercising for the past 3 weeks and now am trying to walk so as to not strain the muscle. I think it might be a muscle tear. Would I need surgery or just let time heal itself. Thanks in advance!
