What Causes Pain On The Incision Scar After Surgical Removal Of A Lipoma?

Hello, Approximately one month ago( it is now October 8th, 2016) I had surgery to remove a lipoma from my upper back. My dermatologist told me it it would be 2 weeks until my stitches were removed and that I should avoid exercise. My stitches were eventually removed and the dermatologist told me that I could return to exercising. Well about one week after that, I was at the gym and felt a dull sting on the incision scar. I patted it dry and saw blood speckles towards the edge of the scar. Well I have bled almost every day that I ve been to the gym since then. NO PAIN, just blood. Should I just stop working out for a while even though it doesn t hurt or will the cut eventually heal itself? I can provide photos if needed. Thank you in advance.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Yes you should stop exercising, at least that part of the body.
Bleeding from an incision is not normal and can lead to infection.

*are you on any blood thinners? What medications are you on?
*do you have any other medical issues?

I recommend :
- stop exercising upper body for a another 2 weeks
- keep the incision site clean. If any open/raw areas are there, use a sterile gauze dressing till it heals.
- if there is any gap/space between the two sides of the skin, or if you have any signs of infection (pain, redness, pus collection, fever, see your doctor right away.

After weeks start exercising moderately (upper body) if it still bleeds, see your doctor right away.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
