What Causes Pain Under The Right Rib Cage, Nausea And Vomiting?

Hi, my husband last night wasn t feeling good! He was complaining about a really sharp pain on his right side of his body by his ribs and stomach! A lil after that he started to feel nauseous and proceeded to throw up! He was throwing up couldn t stop until he finally threw up a big white chunk and then after that he started to feel so much better! What could have just white big chunk been? Why does he continues to have this pain?? He ll be fine a month or two and then it comes and then he ll be fine again and then a month or two later he gets that pain again. Any suggestions on what it could be? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on his symptoms I would like to rule out pyloric stenosis/partial intestinal obstruction and gall bladder disease. The white chunk could be impacted food. Would you clarify a few things for me?

*how old is your husband?
*what is his height and weight?
*does he smoke or consume alcohol?
*does he have any other medical issues or take any medications?
*does he have a sedentary lifestyle?
*do these experiences occur after a party or festival?
*how are his urine and stools?
*does his vomit smell unusually bad?

I recommend:

- a physician consult /gastroenterologist opinion
- blood tests (complete blood count, liver and kidney function tests)
- an ultrasound abdomen
- an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Based on these a diagnosis can be made. I suggest:

- drink plenty of water unless medically contraindicated
- eat a soft diet
- avoid refined grains and processed foods. Stick to whole grains and fresh homemade food.
- chew food thoroughly before swallowing.
- have smaller but frequent meals (every 3 hrs)
- exercise, lose weight if overweight

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Wish you both good health!

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
