What Causes Painful Red Swollen Fingers And Toes Leading To Tingling Sensation?

My daughter, age 22, physically fit, non drug user, etc. is experiencing red swollen fingers and toes that are painful. The occurrence comes on quickly with no warning and usually last several hours. This last time it occurred, it has lasted six days. There has also been tingling and numbness of the toes and finger but no these symptoms don t always occur with the redness. She had MRI of neck and head to rule out pinched nerve or something else. Do you have any ideas. I am trying to get her in to see a rheumatologist.Susan

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear patient,

seeing a rheumaologist is a very good idea since this can be a immune related syndrome like raynauds syndrome or similar, which is best to be tested by a rheumatologist. Your doctor will look at your fingers and toes to check the health of your skin and nails and to check blood flow to these areas. Your doctor also may do a more complete physical exam to check for signs of diseases and conditions that are linked to secondary Raynaud's. Other diagnostics will then follow like cold stimulation test, nailfold capillaroskopy and special blood tests.
Hope this is helping you , if you have any clarificatons you can get back to me, if this was helpful please kindly rate my answer. Best regards
