I had an infection on my back tooth in the right side, my right ear swelled up, I got pain behind ear, I also rash behind the ear and on back of neck. I went to doctor they gave me penicilin and ciprofloxacn about a week later I went to the dentist, I had a big cavity, so he put a temporary filing and might need a root canal. He told me the rash nor the pain behind the ear has nothing to do with the infected tooth. The pain behind my ear throbs often what could it be?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
As per your query, you have symptoms of painful swelling behind the ear which is because of tooth infection and the same has spread through facial spaces and lead to swelling.
Need not to worry. You should do warm saline gargles and apply warm dry compresses to external ear. I would suggest you to consult oral and maxillofacial surgeon once for proper diagnosis.
Doctor may examine by taking IOPA (x-ray) of that particular tooth region and check extent of infection and can provide treatment accordingly. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin or penicillin) at least for 5 days.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
