What Causes Painful Urination After Removal Of A Tumor From The Bladder?

I had an operation last week to remove a tumor from my bladder. Condition unknown yet. However, I wore a catheter for another 5 days after leaving the hospital because of inability to vacate the bladder. That catheter was removed two days ago. I am experiencing frequent and painful urination, probably from an enlarged prostate (something I have had for a number of years but basically under control). I remembered after release from the hospital that I have had the experience of my urinary tract shutting down from hydrocodone on three separate occasions over several years. After each episode I discontinued the medication. I was given a variety of painkillers at the hospital including Norco, Fentanyl. and not sure what was used in the operation. Could this be causing the continued problem with urination a week later? I also experienced a severe bout with shaking and an almost 3 degree drop in temperature yesterday. Is this all related? I am 75 yrs old, but take no other medications. I do take vitamins and supplements.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, most surgeries involve a lot of wear and tear and cause structural changes and healing process unless completed fully remains associated with Pain. Also cystoscope passage may be followed by pain for week or two. But urinalysis to rule out any signs of urine infection should also be done. Using Citrosoda sachet in waters may help to reduce pain alongside OTC analgesics like acetaminophen.

Hope I have answered your query.
