What Causes Perioral Dermatitis?

I was diagnosed with Perioral Dermatitis. I have literally tried everything. I switched my toothpaste to fluoride and SLS-free as well as my shampoo and conditioner. I put coconut oil on at night for moisturizer, and I put Apple Cider Vinegar on the area at night (in addition to two tablespoons of it in water). I read that Perioral Dermatitis has to do with Gut Flora as well. This rash hurts so badly. My doctor prescribed me Amoxicillin and Bactroban today; I m scared to use it for fear that the rash will get worse (it s already starting around my eye). A doctor put me on the steriod cream thinking my tiny spot of dry skin was eczema, but then it got way worse, hence, why I have perioral dermatis now. What are your suggestions?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain as you are diagnosed with Perioral Dermatitis and you have stopped using certain factors that can induce it like fluoridated toothpaste you should also completely stop using any kind of steroid based creams/ointments as they are one of the most potent cause for flaring up Perioral Dermatitis..
It can be caused due to disturbances in microbial flora over the skin, bacterial infection, nasal and topical steroids, flouridated toothpastes, harsh chemical cosmetics, poor facial hygiene, hormonal imbalances etc..
I would suggest you to consult a Dermatologist and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and advise you to apply topically ointments containing Doxycycline, Metronidazole..
You can also be advised oral intake of erythromycin..
Ointments containing Azaelic acid,Pimecrolimus etc can help..
Avoid any skin cosmetic or steroid ointments..
Avoid excess sun exposure, use gel based sunscreen lotion..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
