What Causes Persistent Dry Cough With Respiratory Infection?
I have had a dry, intermittent cough for 6 weeks following a sinus/upper respiratory infection that was treated with antibiotics. The sinus symptoms and post nasal drip are completely gone. However, the cough has continued. The cough improves when I lay down and rest. I also have pain/tightening feeling around the back of the ribs and chest area (that comes and goes as well). My doctor gave be Symbicort and Albuterol but both of them seemed to make chest tightness and cough worse. I'm wondering if I should talk to my doctor about cough-variant asthma since I reacted adversely to the inhalers. I have not had chest XRay, though my doctor told me the upper airways sounded a bit "course" and were probably inflamed. Do you have any advice about whether this could be cough-variant asthma complicating a postinfection cough? Or something else? Thank you!
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. In my opinion, we should definitely rule out lung infection (pneumonia) for your symptoms. Symbicort and albuterol are good drugs for asthma. Since your are not improving, possibility of asthma is very less in your case. So get done chest x ray for pneumonia. You will need antibiotics. Don't worry, you will be alright with all these. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
