hi doctor. I have a 4 year old niece visiting aruba who has had an ear infection and been taking amoxicillin. about 8 days into the amoxicillin, she broke out in a rash over much of her body. she has a low grade fever . ear infection still there. doctor says there might be som purple spots in the rash on feet. feet nd ankels swollen. they put her on z-pac of anitbiotics and are considering a blood test on platelets. what are they they looking for ? could it be it purpura
Hello! Amoxicillin is known to cause drug rash. It seems your niece has developed a rash due to it. Rashes are also accompanied by a mild fever in case of a drug rash. She may need to stop Amoxicillin and a different antibiotic may need to be started based on her ear infection. Drug rash usually disappears on its own after a few days or she may need to take anti-allergic medications. However, if she has had a viral infection, she may have petechie due to low platelets especially if it is Dengue. Hope this helps. Regards, Dr Geeta
