What Causes Persistent Swelling On Elbow After An Olecranon Fracture?

How long can it take for the swelling to go down completely after an olecranon fracture? I have been out of cast about a week and broke my elbow 3 weeks ago but I still have limited movement can only bend arm to 90 degrees and cannot straighten out my arm - is this due to the swelling still? I understand it will need to loosen up as well.

Hello,

Persistent swelling on elbow after you have been out of cast is commonly due to disruption of blood flow to the bone and hence swelling. This inflammatory stage ends approximately 1-3 week after coming out of cast. It usually takes approximately 6 weeks for the fracture to fully heal. You are suggested not to stress the joint with heavy lifting or heavy weight-bearing. The prognosis for olecranon fractures is good and the fracture typically heals within three months.

During this time you will find that your elbow and shoulder become stiff due to the immobilization process. You are suggested to consult your treating doctor so that physical or occupational therapy is recommended so that you regain strength and range of movement slowly gets better. You will need a physiotherapist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
