I have a placental lake It was first discovered at 15 weeks pregnancy the doctor thought it was unimportant and would go away by my 20 weeks u/s I had the 20 week u/s today and it is still there is there any clinical significance or anything I should be worried about? Is there any known cause of placental lakes? what is the difference between a bleed and a lake?
When the separates from the uterine wall during a pregnancy there will be some bleeding. Now if the bleeding stops and a bolod clot is formed, without active bleeding, its a lake. This needs to be monitored carefully during pregnancy. Normally without active bleeding, these resolve on their own.You need to be alert towards any trauma, stress on your abdomen. Further separation of the placenta can harm the fetus. Take as must rest as possible.
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
Placental lakes are large space found in placenta filled with maternal blood. It is normal finding in placenta in early weeks of pregnancy but when it is coupled with decrease blood flow in umblical artery it leads to foetal growth restriction.
Placental bleeding is because of placental separation from uterine cavity, it may occur in placenta previa and placental abruption.
You should consult a gynecologist.
Good luck.
Take care.
