A 68 yrs old male admitted to the hospital for emphysema. he is hypoxic and his lab test reveal low O2 level. His hematocrit is 65%. the physician has tild him that he has a type of polycythemia . if the patient does not understand this term, how can you explain that to the patient.
He is a cold patient in which as compensation due to low oxygen level in a long time, the organism tries to increase the number of red blood cells to have more oxygen into the organs. He needs a procedure called salvation. Please discuss with your doctor for this.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
