What Causes Positive Result For ELISA Test While On Medication For Herpes?

I was misdiagnosed with herpes and given antiviral medication to treat sores. I was taking those up until my elisa test. It was actually syphilis that I had. I have had mono before so I do have the Epstein-Barr virus. And I have been a heavy drinker for the last 4 years. My elisa test came back positive. Could any of these factor into the positive elisa test. And could my test actually be a false positive. I am currently waiting for the results of the western blot test.
