What Causes Prolonged Heavy Vaginal Bleeding While On Mirena?

Hi, I got the mirena inserted about 2 months ago. The first month I bleed for a month straight and I went to get it checked and she said it was fine. Now, about 2 days ago I started bleeding again but this time it s bright red and this is the heaviest I ve ever bleed in my life. In literally changing tampons every hour. What could be going on or is this normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Initially, during first 3 to 6 months, abnormal uterine bleeding in the form of heavy bleeding could happen when you are on birth control implants. This is because these are hormonal preparations, for which body needs to get adjusted to, and hence might take some time for that to happen. Gradually, such symptoms should subside and such unusual bleeding should stop.
However, if abnormal bleeding happens even after 6 months, you need to consult Gynecologist for change of contraceptive method after evaluation which would suit you better.
In the meantime, since excess blood loss could make you anaemic, kindly supplement with iron tablets/syrup along with consumption of iron rich foods to prevent it.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
