What Causes Prolonged Periods Along With Dizziness And Rapid Heart Rate?

Hello, I have had my period for nearly 6 weeks with large clots and excess bleeding, I have been to the doctors and have taken the medication she gave me to stop the bleeding which has worked. I had also been having extreme dizziness, racing pulse and pulsatile tinnitus. During the appointment the doctor went through my blood results and discovered my hemoglobin was low at 83 g/L which explained my symptoms, I was given IV iron 1000mg at the time. Now 5 days later I am still feeling dizzy and weak, and have started having bad headaches and hot flashes. Should my hemoglobin be elevated enough by now to stop these symptoms? Or is there something else that might be causing it? Thankyou

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It takes around a week or more for treatment to be effective. The red blood cells undergo formation, maturation and then are released into blood stream. Anemia or low haemoglobin can cause dizziness, weakness, headaches, tinnitus, increased pulse rate and cold-intolerance. However, hot flashes can occur after iron infusion. If the symptoms worsen or does not subside after a week consult the treating doctor. in meantime, improve your diet by adding vitamin C and vitamin B rich food, increase your fluid intake, avoid extreme physical activity, and aim to add iron rich source to diet. In addition, get your haemoglobin levels tested in about nest 3 weeks.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
