What Causes Rapid Heart Rate After Talking Atenolol?

I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Due to family history my cardiologist put me on atenolol 100mg. My heart rate is high also. I am a 48 year-old female who is not overweight and I workout about 2-3 times a week. I want to quit the blood pressure medicine. Any recommendations I can do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Let me tell you that you have been prescribed atenolol 100 mg among other antihypertensive medicines because your heart rate is high.

Atenolol belons to beta blockers which slow the heart rate apart from lowering blood pressure. Before any decision to quit the blood pressure medicine, you should talk to your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
