What Causes Rapid Heart Rate?

I have experienced A rapid heart rate in the. Late afternoon and evening for a few months. I have a pulse oximeter which has been calibrated. I had an angioplasty 34 years ago and have had no symptoms since. Ido haveCOPD . I am 83 years old, weigh 148lbs. I take 10 mugs of prednisone daily and singular in the evening. I also use levalbuterol and atrovent in a nebulizer...have used these medications for years. Am puzzled asto why this is occurring. Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The rapid heart rate you experience late afternoon and evening is suggestive of possible cardiovascular problem. So, should consult with cardiologist as soon as possible to determine the right diagnosis and run a few diagnostic tests including cardiac check up. At your age, the main diseases can get aggravated. Furthermore, medications you use, can cause side effects even though long time use.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
