Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had 3 episodes of bright red rectal bleeding yesterday. I have taken the OTC nasal decongestant-phenylephine and Anacin 3-4 times over the last few days. Could this be related? I am 52,, BMI 26 have seasonal allergies and have a history on a hospital admission for ischemic bowel related to use of a prescription decongestant.
Decongestant may aggravate the ischemic bowel disease problem by vasoconstriction of blood vessel that supply to intestine. This may lead to blood in stool. Other possibilities are hemorrhoids, fissure, or fistulas may cause blood in stool.
Is it fresh blood or dark color blood or any blood clots in stools?
Avoid spicy food, alcohol and smoking. If passing hard stools, then use lactulose syrup to pass stools. If symptoms not improved please consult your gastroenterologist, he/she will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
